Looking For ..... 13/11/11 ... DAVID CHARLES LEE

I am currently trying to help the daughter of DAVID CHARLES LEE - R95299 to make urgent contact with a lost friend from the Vietnam war.

The friends details are:

GREGORY COLIN BARHAM: Service Number - R95198
Date of birth - 01 Feb 1950 : Place of birth - THE ENTRANCE NSW
Place of enlistment - SYDNEY
Next of Kin - BARHAM LAURIL

Gregory tried to make contact with Mr Lee several years ago and got in contact with Mr Lee’s mother. Unfortunately she passed away two weeks later before the contact information was passed on.

Mr Lee now lives in Thailand and has limited resources to locate Gregory. His health is now failing, and he urgently seeks contact with Gregory. (which he obviously doesn’t want Gregory to know until he makes contact).

I don’t know where else to search apart from the association(s) where he may be a member, or hopefully someone knows how to get in contact with him.

Due to privacy I do not expect anyone to send me his contact details (if known) but ask if you can please pass on my details to him in relation to Mr Lee.

During the war, Gregory Barham was known as “Slim” Barham.

David Charles Lee’s Daughter:

Looking For .... 29/3/11 ..... Old J.R. Photos

Hi Guys,

Ian Dunn here, a JR from the 1st Intake at Leeuwin in 1960.

I have started a website for old photos of JR's from the years 1960 to 1984. Please note: I said old photos - not old JR's

We don't want photos taken after you graduated from Leeuwin or Cerberus - only from the JR training years, thanks.

The idea came from interest shown at the JR Golden Reunion in Perth in July 2010.

It was felt that someone should preserve the history of JR's and form a Museum of some sort. One group of guys are trying to track down the "Leeuwin Bell", while others are looking for "Honour Boards" from the walls of the Drill Hall.

There is already the "Boys Room" at Garden Island in Sydney so we thought that a photo museum would be a worthwhile project.

The website is at www.jrphotomuseum.com  Please visit and check out what we have done so far.

Photos from 1960 to 1984 can be emailed as per the instructions on the website and will be automatically added to that album in the email address that you choose to use.

There are 25 Albums - one for each year at Leeuwin and 2 Albums for Cerberus. Another Album is for photos that don't fit into any year in particular. Photos of interest can be downloaded for free or prints can be purchased at good prices - we have not put a profit margin on them. Other items with photo prints on them can also be purchased - such as mugs and T shirts etc.

I  hope that you can see the merit in spreading the word about this project to all our JR shipmates so we can preserve our history in photographic form and share our JR years with the world.

Our previous experience tells us that 'word of mouth' is the best form of communication.

We are a registered 'Not for Profit' business and cannot afford widespread advertising.

I propose to send this message to as many Intakes as I can locate and hope to get good exposure and response from the JR community.

Hoping you will help us,

Ian Dunn

Looking For .... 17/2/11 .... HMAS TEAL Information

HMAS Teal, 1152, De-Commissioned in 1973 and was sold in 1977 to the Gold Coast to be converted to a prawn trawler for the Gulf of Carpentaria fisheries (thanks to Phil Robson who was onboard her in the Gulf), then sold to two Greek brothers (named Palace or Palice ?) from Tasmania who converted her down there to an abalone mother ship. She was next heard of in Perth for the America's Cup in 1983, where she had the aft superstructure added to work as a ferry and a "race chaser" before ending up in Hong Kong and being sold to The Near East University (NEU), Cyprus.

Any information about the Teal or sightings of her in Tassie or in Perth would be appreciated. Any recollections of newspaper articles or ads (as a "race Chaser " or ferry in Perth) also any photos.

Looking For ....... 14/2/11...... THOMAS EDWARD HARRISON

I am trying to locate an old school friend to let him know of a School reunion after 58 years. It is scheduled to take place later this year as a Reunion of the 1953 Scholarship classes of Eagle Junction State School, in Brisbane.  To date we have had no luck in locating our school friend.

The gentleman's name is .. Thomas Edward Harrison.

Tom would be 70 or 71 years old by now. We understand that he attained the rank of Lieutenant Commander at some stage of his career in the RAN. I met Tom's younger brother Philip years ago and Philip told me that Tom had achieved that rank but also added that he had become a Barrister at Law. Perhaps in the Navy? Last week one of our schoolmates told me that he met Tom in Sydney some years ago and he recalled that Tom was wearing the uniform of a Naval officer.

Any advice you can give me would be most appreciated,

My sincere thanks and best wishes,
John

Looking for ..... 4/5/10 ...... DUKW Information

Hi
My name is John Loughman and I am the Model Curator for the Australian Vietnam Veterans Museum at Phillip Island, Vic.
I am preparing to build a 1/35 scale model of a  DUKW operated by HMAS Sydney before it received the six Landing Craft.
I need confirmation that the vehicle colour was grey and any further information concerning serial numbers / code nrs etc would be greatly
appreciated. Any further information as to how many DUKW's were carried and how they operated would be great also.
The Museum already has a 10 foot long 1/72 scale model of HMAS Sydney on display, but we would appreciate any more Navy  memorabilia and photographs if ex-RAN people wished to donate.
We also process veterans 1/35 mm slides and photographs including negatives onto cd-rom's at no charge, usually with the proviso that the slides are donated to the museum for prosperity and safekeeping. The donor receives several cd' copies of the slides which enables the slides to be more easily displayed on a computer or television than the tedious business of setting up the projector, screen and darkening the room.
The Museum website is www.vietnamvetsmuseum.org

Thanks in advance

I'm trying to assist an Ex-WRAN RO who is suffering from Hogkins Lymphoma.

She served in Darwin and Coonawarra in 67-70 and I believe that the cancer
is probably caused by her service as there is no heredity links.

I would appreciate any assistance on what to do.

Fellow DDGers,

The Commanding Officers Dinner is over and I am told it was a great success.  Hopefully have some details in my next report.

Now comes the task of identifying equipment etc that may be of use either in the refurbishment of the ADAMS or in the Pier Side display.

I am seeking your help in this endeavour.  If you know of the location of any EX DDG equipment (large or small) that we could possibly use please let me know ASAP:

b.
Where it is
c.
The name and contact details of the person or organisation who is holding the equipment
d.
Names and contact details of anyone you think may be able to help locate equipment

I would also ask that you search your memory and perhaps you own mementos for photographs or videos of DDG activities.  If you have photos and you are happy to let me have copies that would be great.  If you can forward them to me in electronic format via e mail.

I am particularly after photos of things like:

bullet

bullet

·         Honour Boards

bullet

Also don’t forget to register for membership of the ACVA it only takes a few minutes and does not cost you anything unless you wish to donate $25.00 to become a plankowner.  Just e mail the attached application form to Dave Myerly his address is on the form.

Thanking you all in anticipation of some good results.

Cheers,
Wally

Looking for ...... 21/9/09        -- Daines, James Richard

Not sure if you can help regarding finding information regarding my 'Deceased' Father in Law on behalf of his Wife and children still surviving.

We have discovered through the Canberra War Memorial that James Richard DAINES - N473604 served for a very short period in the Army - 7 Battalion Volunteer Defence Corps March 1944 to October 1944.  He is shown on Military Records as "War Service"

Jim (James) was born in 1925 so he was only 19 years of age in late 1944.   We have a photograph of him in Naval Uniform with a Cap Band reading HMAS VENDETTA.  Vendetta (1) History from the War Memorial states that Vendetta (1) "Paid Off" on 27 November 1945 and her hull was scuttled off Sydney Heads on 2 July 1948.  There is NO War Service recorded for Jim, mainly because he was too young.
Jim Maried on 27 November 1948 and the family do not know of any Military Service pre November 1948 or Post 1956 when Vendetta (2) was launched.
Any help and info to fill this "Family History" would be appreciated.   Jim's Wife turns 80 Years of age in 2010 and we wanted to solve this mistery by then.

Looking for ...... 8/9/09        --  Gibson, Arthur John -- Ex 7 RAR.

I have been contacted by a Gulf War 1 Veteran who is friends with a deceased Vietnam Veterans daughter and he has asked me if I can find any details on her father, in particular the circumstances surrounding his death. He is ex 7 RAR second tour and was apparently WIA and hospitalised in Sydney (Concord? veterans hospital ) where he apparently died in 1972, the daughter was only 4 yrs old and obviously has no real recollection of her dad. She doesn't even know how he died or what his wounds were, it seems her mum prefers to keep it all to herself probably to protect her kids.

If anybody can help please contact me on the below email address, his name and number are Arthur John Gibson 218450. Any info would be much appreciated.

FYI, he appears in the nominal roll.

 Many thanks

Looking for ...... 10/1/09 ......            --          Charlie Coy 1 RAR

Just wondering if you can put this out on your network of Veterans please in that we may be able to locate some members or ex members of Charlie Coy 1 RAR who served in Somalia.

To-day I came across perhaps one of the most horrific cases of neglect of a Veteran who has slipped through the cracks of all Ex Service Organizations, DVA and of his mates whom he served with.  Michael was born on 27 May 1968 served with we believe, 1 Platoon Charlie Coy 1 RAR in Somalia .

Michael lives in a geriatric nursing home in Herston Brisbane, which his carer calls a hell hole, his life is in the control of the Adult Guardian and the Public Trustee looks after his finances for the rest of his life.  He virtually has no one in life except his carer, an exceptional Scottish elderly man.  How this has happened is unbelievable.  I am trying to ascertain members who may have served with Michael, contacts that is,  so I can obtain information regards to Michael's service in Somalia .

Michael has Huntington's Disease and it is extremely difficult for him to communicate and so if I can find someone who served with him to talk too, I can help Michael make the relevant claims to the Dept of Veterans' Affairs.  Michael has a 15 year old daughter who I have spoken to as well and is also desperate to find help for her father.

He can receive messages but his brain cannot transmit information back and that is the nature of the disease I believe.  His carer who brought Michael to see us in an off chance that we may be able to help, is Michael's life line for communication.  This is a terrible case for a young man of 40 years old, who has also served in East Timor .

My request:  I would like to be able to contact any members of Charlie Company 1 RAR who served in Somalia to gather more information that can support Michael 'Cookie' Cook.

Thank you in anticipation, any help or suggestion would be gratefully received.

Looking for ...... 8/9/08 ......          --            Curlew Crew

I am going a VEA claim for a Veteran in QLD.   He served on board HMAS CURLEW and has been allotted operational service from 17 April to 2 November 1966.

He slipped and fell in heavy seas injuring his back.   This problem has now become very serious and he has left the workforce.
If anyone had any service on CURLEW during the period in question could they send me an email.

DVA QLD have knocked back his claim for back and knees due to NO medical evidence on his medical file.   You and I know that Sweepers did not carry a Medic.   However DVA will not entertain the idea at this point in time.   So we are going to the VRB.

Looking for ...... 6/2/08 ......     --           Major Tom Hall

I received a request from the Australian Deputy High Commissioner in Singapore to assist in finding contact details for Major Tom Hall, apparently retired. He undertook research for the author William Lee Reynolds' book 'Kraite'. which as you know is part of the history of Z Special Force.

I can find no reference to the book on the web or the Australian War Memorial (AWM) website He did not serve in Vietnam, and could have been an Army Reserve Officer. I have contacted the AWM asking it for assistance.

Can I ask for your assistance in tracking this man? We have had considerable success in the recent past in tracing soldiers, and perhaps we can do it again.

John
